Dissolution process:
1. Materials and equipment preparation
Raw materials:
Carbomer 980 powder (0.5% addition, i.e. 0.5g per 100g system).
Deionized water (recommended to avoid electrolyte interference).
Neutralizer: NaOH (10% aqueous solution), TEA (triethanolamine) or AMP-95 (2-amino-2-methyl-1-propanol).
Equipment:
High shear mixer (such as homogenizer or high-speed disperser).
Precision electronic balance (accuracy 0.01g).
pH meter (calibrated to pH 4.0/7.0 buffer).
Brookfield viscometer (LV or RV rotor, suitable for 20-50 rpm).
2. Operation steps
1. Disperse Carbomer
Slowly sprinkle powder: Slowly sprinkle 0.5g Carbomer 980 into 99.5g deionized water (room temperature) while stirring at 800-1000 rpm (avoid pouring directly, otherwise it is easy to agglomerate).
High shear dispersion: switch to the homogenizer (5000-10000 rpm), continue stirring for 10-15 minutes, until a uniform suspension without particles is formed (not neutralized at this time, the viscosity is low).
2. Neutralization and thickening
Adjust pH: add neutralizer (such as 10% NaOH) drop by drop, while stirring at low speed (300 rpm), and monitor the pH value in real time to 5.5-7.0 (optimal thickening range).
Note: The neutralization process is exothermic, it is recommended to add in batches to avoid local over-alkali.
FAQ
Q1: Is Carbopol 980 suitable for salt-containing formulations?
A: It is suitable for low-electrolyte environments. High salt content may cause viscosity to decrease. It is recommended to use Carbopol 676 first.
Q2: How to avoid particles during formulation?
A: It must be sprinkled slowly into the water and stirred continuously (500~800 rpm). Glycerin can be used to premix the powder to improve dispersibility.
Q3: What should I do if the viscosity is insufficient after neutralization?
A:Check whether the pH meets the standard (5.0~7.0), or increase the amount of Carbopol 980 (no more than 1.0%).
